Water heater repair cost varies a lot depending on what’s actually wrong โ here’s what drives the price up or down.
The part that’s failing
A faulty thermostat or heating element is a relatively quick, inexpensive fix. A failing tank, on the other hand, usually isn’t repairable at all โ once a tank is leaking or rusted through, replacement is the only real option.
Tank vs. tankless
Tankless water heaters have more electronic components (flow sensors, igniters, heat exchangers) that can fail individually, which sometimes means a more involved diagnosis than a traditional tank unit โ but also means a smaller, cheaper part swap instead of a full tank replacement.
Age of the unit
Most tank water heaters last 8-12 years. If yours is already past that range, we’ll usually tell you honestly whether a repair makes sense or if you’re better off putting that money toward a new unit instead.
Access and location
A water heater in an easily accessible closet or garage is a straightforward job. One tucked in a tight crawlspace or attic takes longer to service, which affects labor time.
