A burst pipe or major leak is stressful, but what you do in the first few minutes can significantly limit the damage before a plumber arrives.
1. Shut Off the Water
Know your main shutoff valve location before you need it — usually near the water meter or where the main line enters the house. For a single fixture leak, the local shutoff valve under the sink or behind the toilet may be enough.
2. Shut Off Electricity to the Affected Area
If water is near outlets, switches, or appliances, shut off power to that area at the breaker panel before doing anything else. Water and electricity are a serious safety risk.
3. Contain What You Can
Towels, buckets, and a wet/dry vacuum can limit water spreading to other rooms while you wait. Move furniture and valuables out of the area if it’s safe to do so.
4. Document the Damage
Take photos and video before you start cleanup. This makes any insurance claim much easier and gives your plumber useful context before they even arrive.
5. Call a Plumber Right Away
Don’t wait to see if it gets better — a small leak from a stressed pipe can turn into a full failure. The sooner a professional looks at it, the less repair (and cleanup) you’re looking at.
